The first quarter ends on Thursday! Don’t forget to check missing assignments in Skyward. If it is not already reflected in their grade, any missing work that does not get turned in by Thursday will turn to a zero, which will definitely change their grade! So, don’t just look at grades- look at missing assignments!
Also, be on the lookout in the next couple days instructions on how to sign up for Parent-Teacher Conferences, occurring Oct 19th and 20th.

Hello students and families! This information will also be posted on our website. If you haven’t checked it out, feel free! http://smsnavigators.weebly.com. This week marks the halfway point of first quarter already! Teachers are increasing the expectation of work pace in the classroom. Please check Skyward and stay on top of assignments. You shouldn’t be seeing homework coming home constantly if your student is using their class time wisely, so make sure to utilize that time, students!

Below is what is going on this week in your classes. Also, a couple extra overall reminders: Students need to bring their iPads CHARGED every morning. There are no opportunities for charging them during the day. If students are unable to charge at home or have extenuating circumstances where they shouldn’t be bringing their iPad home, let us know if you need to set up a check-in/check-out system. Finally, now that we are in the swing of things and getting more comfortable, we ask that families be aware that students who are not utilizing class time well may be asked to stay after school when possible.

Extra stuff going on this week to be aware of:
- Please remind students to have ipads charged when they come to school! When students fail to bring their ipads and they need them for a class, they will have to make due without, which will result in class work turning into homework.
- REQUEST FOR ITEMS! On our team, we have a tchotchke (you say it like this: chotch-kee) box where students can spend 2 cougar cash on various prizes. These are usually just little baubles like cute pencils, small school supplies, little toys (think classic elementary school treasure chest). If you are willing to donate any items for this, please send them to school attn: Ms. Coleman. Thank you!!
- Science- 1/23: Graded Periodic Tables, Intro. to Plate Tectonics 1/24: Plate Tectonic Packet p1-p3 Due Friday 1/25: Pangaea Puzzle 1/26: Lab: Cracks in the Hard-Boiled Earth 1/27: Grade Plate Tectonics Packet p1-p3, Finish Lab/Puzzle
- Social Studies- Students participated in a discussion today over governments and economies. We will review in class tomorrow to prepare for our quiz on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday we will introduce a new game we will be playing throughout the 3rd quarter, which focuses on international diplomacy. Please check Skyward, as it is all current and some students are still missing work. Students can complete anything missing at home or after school.
- Math-
- Compacted: Section 6.7: Simple interest work tomorrow. Chapter review on Wednesday. Chapter test on Thursday/Friday. Make sure if students are struggling and need extra help, please utilize after-school time to make sure we are understanding the material and are ready to test.
- Math 7: Section 5.6 and 5.7 this week over slope and direct variation. HW 7 and 8 were due today, but several students did not have those completed. There are several students that will be needing to stay after school to get work completed/correct quizzes.

- ELA HART:
- Monday and Tuesday we are wrapping up the reader’s workshop with a day of review and the test over parts of argument and persuasive strategies.
- Tuesday we move into the writer’s workshop. Students will be writing claims and supporting them with reasons and evidence. You may see your student finishing up short writing activities at home towards the end of the week.

- Monday and Tuesday we are wrapping up the reader’s workshop with a day of review and the test over parts of argument and persuasive strategies.
- ELA ZELVY:
- This week we are practicing the steps behind argumentative writing. Students are developing a claim on an issue, then researching and reading to find reasons and evidence. We are balancing this concept with some self selected reading time. Here’s what’s due this week: prewriting packet on Tuesday, another one pager and drafting packet on Friday. Please check Skyward to see what is missing and what is turned in and awaiting a grade.

Hello students and families!
Extra stuff going on this week to be aware of:
- Please remind students to have ipads charged when they come to school! Due to some technical behind the scenes changes, students will no longer be able to check out a spare from the SMS library. We do have some laptops kids may use if they get in a bind. Reminder that chargers need to stay at home.
- Please check Skyward on a regular basis, and not just the overall grade but “missing assignments.” We’re only 2 weeks into the new quarter and several students are already missing work.
Coleman. Thank you!!
- Science- Grade Atom Tests, Periodic Table Discussion and start on Periodic Table and Element Bingo. Periodic Table possibly due Friday. I will need to see where the kids are on it. If not Friday, it will be due on Monday.
- Social Studies- Today was the last class period work time on our World Government Blackboard unit. Starting tomorrow, we will be using class time learning about Economies. Please check Skyward, as some students have homework from not finishing the government assignments. Students may be asked to stay after school this week if they are falling behind and not working at home.
- Math- HW 1-4 is now late for all classes. They can still be turned in, but there will be points missing. HW 5-8 will be due Friday for all classes, as well. Notes will be slowing down this week, but we will be doing two sections for each class. Overall, HW completion and mini-quiz scores were great last week! Keep it up!
- ELA HART:
- We will continue to work on identifying the parts of an argument in various texts this week. Students will complete assignment #5 in class with their tablemates and assignment #6 on their own.
- We have also begun self-selected reading (SSR) during ELA. We aim to read for 20 minutes, 3 times a week. The kids have done a great job choosing books and reading during class. They really enjoy it! This week they will turn in a one pager (ask them to show you the rubric!) over what they have read in their book so far. This will be due on Friday, and they ought to work on it at home since we will not have enough class time for them to complete it at school.
- ELA ZELVY- This week we will be finishing the reading of argumentative text and shifting into the writing of argumentative text. Students have a quiz on Friday to evaluate their ability to read and trace opposing claims on one issue. I’m encouraging students to take as little or as much time as they need to study. You can find a review folder in Blackboard, link-Argumentative Workshop, binder-review.

Hello students and families!
Extra stuff going on this week to be aware of:
- Please remind students to have ipads charged when they come to school. There are only so many charging stations in the library, and they have been full daily! Students use these tools throughout the day, and need a full charge to take care of their class work.
- As we return from a holiday and have 4 weeks until the next, we are really focused on hallway behavior and how we enter and leave a classroom. We will be reinforcing our expectations of students entering the classroom with their belongings and getting ready for class instead of leaving their things in the room and running into the hallway. We will also be talking to students about when they are in the hallway, how to control our bodies and the volume of our voices. Feel free to chat with your students about this at home because if there are students who continue to struggle with appropriate hallway behavior, you may be contacted and they may have a minor (or major depending on severity) to discuss. Students will also be informed that as a whole, if hallway expectations are not being met, we might adjust the schedule to eliminate excess passing periods.
- Science- 11/28: Start Chemical Properties CH2 Sec3, in class discussion, 11/29: Physical/Chemical Properties Review (in class work), 11/30: Score 5, 12/1: Lab: White Before Your Eyes, 12/2: Start CH2 Sec3 Drawings/Vocab/Questions Due Tues., 12/6
- Social Studies- Students are working on several different cultural activities. Feel free to ask to see their calendar of deadlines. By the end of the quarter, students are to complete 2 of 3 choices of Food, Art or Music learning modules in Blackboard with corresponding worksheets. They will also work on an independent research project over the culture of a chosen country. Some are working in Blackboard and some are working on their projects, but they should have a clear schedule mapped out to show where they are in the process. If they start to fall behind on their chosen deadlines because use of class time, students may be asked to work after school when possible.
- Math- Math 7 has a mini-quiz over the first three sections of Chapter 4 this Friday. Work in packets have seemed beneficial so far. Make sure to stay on top of work as to not get behind. There are several missing assignments in Skyward as well. Students received 4.3 today and we will spend the rest of the week working with this section. Math ⅞ are moving through chapter 13. Homework 6 is due tomorrow. Continue to work on 13.4 and 13.5… These are meant to challenge, see what you can do and come to school with questions.
- ELA HART: Unit 3 - Poetry & Figurative Language
- Periods 1 & 2 and Periods 3 & 4: Students are working at their own pace to read and respond to a poetic novel during class. All work is due by Dec 9, but they have broken their book up into three sections and created a reading plan to ensure they will finish on time. Ask them about their plan! Assignments #11 and #12 (reading and responding to the second section) are to be completed this week. If your student has not completed these assignments, they will need to complete them as homework this week. Students are welcome to work ahead in their poetic novels.
- Periods 5 & 6: students will read their chosen poetic novels and complete a poetic elements scavenger hunt independently. Their completed scavenger hunt is due by Dec 9. We will be reading another poetic novel as a whole class and working on close reading together.
- ELA ZELVY-Poetry & Figurative Language
- Today we set a deadline for our current unit. All reading and assignments are to be finished by Tuesday, December 6th. If students are caught up, this entails the last ⅓ of their poetic novel, appetizer #3, and entree #3.
- Please continue to check Skyward to see what your students has turned in.
- World Language: We will practice the conversation and numbers in Latin. On Wednesday, November 30th we will have a short quiz over the conversation and numbers. On Thursday Dec. 1st we will start Spanish.

We will be beginning a new checklist system to try and incorporate more blending of classes. We will also be utilizing more homework for students for continued practice.
- ELA HART: Unit 3 - Poetry & Figurative Language

- Once Close Reading notes are completed, students will move into the Practice Folder in Blackboard. Assignment #4 is due by the end of class on Wednesday. This is their chance to practice the close reading process on a poem of their choice. Directions are in a doc available in Blackboard and Google Classroom.
- Assignment #5 is due by the end of class Friday. Students will take the analysis of their poem from assignment #4 and write an analysis paragraph. Directions are available in Blackboard/Google Classroom.
- If students finish Assignment #5 before the end of the day Friday, they will move into the Apply Folder and choose their poetic novels. They’ll read and analyze these novels for the remainder of the unit.
- ELA ZELVY-
- This week we are ready to dive into our novels in verse! Students will be introduced to our reading response assignments tomorrow.
- **Navi families, I encourage you to look at your student’s ela grade in Skyward, specifically to see what is missing, and what is pending. Pending, or no count, means your student has turned in work and I am in the process of grading it. Missing means your student has not turned in the assignment and it will transfer to a zero at the end of the quarter. Good news is there are very few missing essays, however, there are many missing grades for editing conferences, and revising conferences.
- World Language- Students will start working on their language project on Monday, November 7th. They will have a week to work on it in class. They will have to post it on Google Classroom Friday, November 11th. I will attach the instructions for the project on Google Classroom and also an email on Monday morning.

Some students may still have a missing assignment from last week (similarities and differences between Dinka and Nuer, so feel free to ask them about this if you notice it is missing!)
- Math- This week in compacted we will be finishing up Rates, Ratios, and Proportions. There will most likely be an assessment at the end of the week. - ELA ZELVY- Students are using the writing process this week to develop a comparison-contrast essay based on the novel we just finished. YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO HOLD A 20-MINUTE CONFERENCE WITH AN ADULT TO EDIT THEIR DRAFT NEAR THE END OF THE WEEK. You might want to ask your child and set up a time for this so it’s not last minute. Essays that are not turned in on Friday are expected to be finished over the weekend and ready to turn in Monday morning.
- World Language- We will finish talking and learning about the different benefits of learning a second language. They will have a quiz over this on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday students will research topics that we will encounter during our reading of A Long Walk to Water and create presentations to share with one another. Also note if work is marked “missing.” Students are expected to stay after school to complete their missing work. Due to my coaching schedule, I am not available much after school. However, Cougar Corner (after school tutoring) runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday until 4:30. Students can let me know they are going to attend and I’ll be sure the supervising teachers know to expect them.
- ELA ZELVY- We are starting this week with some pre-reading activities to build background knowledge for our upcoming novel, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park. We will begin this novel on Thursday. Although this novel is fiction, there are some strong historical ties. We will often be weaving in nonfiction articles.
- World Language- Students will start their project presentations, I am not sure how long this will take, but I am anticipating no longer than this week. As soon as we are done with presentations, I will introduce Latin for 2-3 days.

9/12:
Hello students and families! This information will also be posted on our website. If you haven’t checked it out, feel free! http://smsnavigators.weebly.com. This week marks the halfway point of first quarter already! Teachers are increasing the expectation of work pace in the classroom. Please check Skyward and stay on top of assignments. You shouldn’t be seeing homework coming home constantly if your student is using their class time wisely, so make sure to utilize that time, students!
Extra reminder to make sure iPads are charged before the day begins! Many students are trying to charge at school, which is not always an option.
Below is what is going on this week in your classes.

- Hart- This week we will conclude our study of reading closely in informative text. Students will work individually at their own pace or in a small group with me to complete a series of assignments. We will wrap up on Tuesday 9/13. All activities will be due then. These assignments are already posted in Skyward so you can track your student’s progress. We will also hold our first Socratic Seminar this week. Students will discuss the topic of immigration, as we’ve been reading about Ellis Island in class. One group of students will be our inner circle (the group that does the talking) this week. Next week we will switch it up so all students will have a chance to participate on the inner circle. Some Skyward notes: A “P” stands for pending; I mark assignments with this code to show that the work has been handed in but not yet graded.
- Zelvy-We are spending the first half of week taking focused reading responses through the writing process. We will then shift into reading informative text and identifying central ideas and supporting details. This informative text builds background knowledge on our upcoming novel, stay tuned!
- World Language- Students will be working on their Language/Culture project for a week. Students will present the project the following week. The project is already posted on Google Classroom and they will get a hardcopy on Monday. I will also email the project to parents and students. You will find all the details about it, there. Also, please check grades. If you want your child or your child wants to retake the last quiz have them prepare for it and ask to retake it by Wednesday, 14th. All of their notes are found in Google Classroom.
